There are some songs that have truth in them. Big truths simple truths. Here are some song lyrics that I have found to just say it how it is.
1) Where does magic come from? I think magic's in the learning
'cause now when Christians sit with Pagans only pumpkin pies are burning
Dar Williams--The Christians and the Pagans
2) How do you measure the worth of a man, in wealth or strength or size
In how much he gained, or how much he gave
The answer will come, the answer will come to him who tries to look at his life through heaven's eyes.
--Stephen Schwartz (from Prince of Egypt) --Through Heaven's Eyes
3) Will I lose my dignity? Will someone care? Will I wake tomorrow from this nightmare?
Jonathan Larson (From Rent) --Will I?
4) Careful the things you say, children will listen
Careful the things you do, children will see and learn
Children may not obey, but children will listen
Children will look to you, for which way to turn, to learn what to be
Careful before you say 'listen to me,'
Stephen Sondheim (From Into the Woods) --Children will Listen
5) And if life is just a highway, then the soul is just a car
And objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are.
Jim Steinman--Objects in the Rear View Mirror
6) The darkest night ain't black enough
To keep the morning light from shining
The highest wall ain't tall enough
to keep the smallest man from climbing
Meat Loaf--Alive
7)Sometimes I lie awake night after night
coming apart at the seams
Eager to please, ready to fight
Why do I go to extremes?
Billy Joel--I Go to Extremes
8) There's battle lines bein drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Buffalo Springfield--For What It's Worth
9) It felt like a given
Something a woman's born to do
A natural ambition
To see a reflection of me and you
And I'd feel so guilty
If that was a gift I couldn't give
And could you be happy
If life wasn't how we pictured it
And sometimes I just want to wait it out
To prove everybody wrong
And I need your help to move on
Cause you know it's so hard
It's so hard
The Dixie Chicks--So Hard
10) You've got to be taught to hate and fear
You've got to be taught from year to year
It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
And people whose skin is a different shade
You've got to be carefully taught
Oscar Hammerstien II (From South Pacific) --You've Got to Be Carefully Taught
11) And when a brokenhearted people
Living in the world agree
There will be an answer
Let it be
For though they may be parted
There is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer
Let it be
Paul McCartney --Let it Be (Yes it's a Beatles song, but we all know Paul wrote it)
12) Would you believe in a love at first sight?
Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time
What do you see when you turn out the light?
I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends.
I get high with a little help from my friends
I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends
The Beatles--A Little Help From My Friends
13) There's nothing you can do that can't be done
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung
Nothing you say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy...
All you need is love
All you need is love
All you need is love, love. Love is all you need
The Beatles--All You Need Is Love
What songs show you your truths?
Nice to see the Beatles included!

I will be singing Billy Joel for the next two hours. I haven't thought of that song for a long time, but you are absolutely right about the lyrics.

The line from Rent always strikes a chord in me so does the Beatles "all you need is love." Happy TT!

Ahhh... Jim Steinman.
Great songs, and you're right--very meaningful lyrics.

I love that Dar Williams song. I saw her perform it at Floyd Fest.
Let if Be was the song we sang to my brother Dan when he was dying.
