August 26 is Women's equality day. It commemorates 90 years that women have had the right to vote in the United States.
As such my thursday thirteen will recognize thirteen women who paved the way--in one form or another.
1) Susan B. Anthony Without her, women still might not be allowed to vote.
2) Lucretia Mott The very first feminist.
3) Elizabeth Cady Stanton -With Susan B. Anthony the other mother of the women's rights movement.
4) Belva Ann Lockwood The first woman sworn into legal practice before the supreme court. She was the first woman to run for president--this is in 1884 over 30 years before women would have the right to vote.
5) Mary Church Terrell--Founder and first president of the National Associate of Colored Women. Also the first African-American woman to be appointed to the DC board of education.
6) Sojourner Truth--Amazing orator and activist. Even though she was illiterate.
7) Carrie Chapman Catt--Organized the successful ratification campaign for the 19th amendment.
8) Alice Paul--Went to jail and endured hunger strikes, all to grant women the right to vote.
9) Mary Ann Shad--An African American, she worked alongside Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and was the first black woman to cast a vote in a national election.
10) Katherine McCormick--Funded the majority of research that led to the birth control pill.
11) Jeanette Rankin--Elected first US Congresswoman in 1917 (three years prior to women getting the vote)
12) Ida Wells-Barnett--One of the first female leaders of the civil rights movement. Documented lynching. Refused to give up her seat on a train 71 years before Rosa Parks.
13) All those who were not famous. The women who fought with their husbands, fathers, brothers to take part in the movement. All those who marched. All those who risked so much that we can have the right to vote.
I thank you.
And now for your viewing pleasure Betty Friedan reading the 19th Amendment. Goosebumps!

I agree! Here's to the women who helped all of us gain recognition as humans! If only it were worldwide.

Very inspiring, although as a New Zealander I don't recognize any of the names. New Zealand women were the first in the world to get the vote.

This is a great list! Thank you so much for posting it. A couple of other names: Mary Johnston, the author of To Have and To Hold (best seller of 1900) and Ellen Glasgow, another writer of the same era. They were Virginia suffragists.

Hi, thanks for the comment on my blog..yes #10 does work..I have always beleived kids should have a bed time and I instilled this in them when they were small, by the age of 1 they were in bed asleep by 7:30, they keep this bedtime till they are double digits(10) then it changes to 8 or 8:30..then when they turn 13 it's 9pm...works for us, my hubby and I know each night we will be able to have a conversation and quiet time with just us..
anyway have a great thursday13..Peta
